Kanmuriwashi (Crested Serpent Eagle)

Photo Diary: 11th March 2010. It's been a while since my last post, but that's not because I haven't been busy - if anything I've been busier than ever. You may have noticed new additions to my site which I've made over the last couple of weeks such as Mt. Nosoko and Hirabanarijima; two spots which I highly recommend that you should check out.

KanmuriwashiAnyway, back to today's post. I decided that it was time to add some video to the site so I rode up to Banna park today in the hope of getting some footage of the butterflies and birds which inhabit the mountain. I turned on my camera as I rode back along the west side of the park in the hope of grabbing a shot of something interesting such as the huge peacock which had eluded me earlier in the day, and thank goodness that I did, as I was about to get very very lucky.

As I crossed the last bridge for heading back to town I glanced into a tree and could hardly believe my eyes - a Kanmuriwashi (or Crested Serpent Eagle in English) was perched directly above my head. This was a bird which I've been eager to capture with my camera for a long long time and although I didn't have my SLR with me, I think that this footage is as good, if not better than what I could have expected to achieve with my still camera.

Video of the Kanmuriwashi, introduced by a rather unshaven, tired-looking gaijin:

And for those of you who are simply interested in the eagle and would rather not listen to me banging on for 3 minutes:
