Chura san's Viewpoint

This is one of Kohama's most famous spots and is well worth a visit even if you've already stopped-off at Ufudake. It featured in NHK's TV series 'Chura san' and a marble stone has been erected here to commemorate the show. This has earned it the name 'Chura san tenmondai' in Japanese which roughly translates to 'Chura san's observation point' in English.

Positioned on the north east of Kohama it arguably offers the best view of Iriomotejima to be found in the archipelago.

On a sunny day the 2 mile stretch of water which separates the islands and the beautiful reef which extends from Kohama's shoreline makes for one of the most stunning scenes of natural beauty to be found in Japan.

Access

Chura san's observation point hillThe modest height of Churasan's observation point makes it a little harder to located than Ufudake. After passing Ufudake's parking area take the 5th road on your right followed by the 2nd road on your left. At this point you should be able to see what is little more than a large mound with a pathway leading to the top.

It should be noted that when I last visited Kohama the standard access route through a farm was temporarily prohibited. However, since when did a barbed-wire fence stand in the way of a photographer and the shots which he'd travelled 2 hours to get.
